My parents went to visit family in Hungary and they surprised my dad with one of these classics. My dad said it brought back memories of his old cabbie days in Budapest. We're trying to import one to Cali soon hopefully.

Bird (one of the posters here) imported one. Here’s the first post on the topic:

My family’s first car was one just like this (quite early, 1973 or 74 model year). My parents bought it in 1987, when I was 6.

Even had those aftermarket plastic vent things on the hood, but in red.

Heh...funny story there...we haven’t actually imported it yet...Putin invading Ukraine kind of screwed up our road trip a little. We really didn’t want to drive through a war zone. So our Lada is still sitting in Estonia, waiting patiently for Putin to calm the fuck down.

That’s a nice one! I like the lucite flower shift knob. I have one of those sitting on my kitchen counter...hopefully someday it will meet the Lada we bought it for...we still haven’t imported the one RamblinRover mentioned. We’ve owned it almost two years and have never seen it. It’s in storage in Estonia.

You may have some trouble getting one registered in Calfornia. If it’s pre-1975 they still may deny your registration and want you to have it modified to be federally compliant. We brought over a 1970 Toyota Crown and CA denied the registration. Other people have been succesful fighting them, but be prepared to fight.

If you haven’t already, check out ladausa.net

It’s the only forum for Lada enthusiasts in North America. It’s not much, but there are a few people on there who really know their stuff.

Can these be registered in California, with their emissions requirements?

My grandpa had one in the exact same colour. Well, technically it was a Shiguly not a Lada. It was then passed on to my mum and helped us flee to the other side of the iron curtain. Tons of good memories connected to this car.

Anything past 25 years doesn’t need to pass smog. I believe it can be.
